Post Partum Syndrome Signs and Symptoms


Postpartum depression (PPD), also called postnatal depression, is an abnormal emotional and clinical stress which affects mothers after giving birth. Women with PPD experience sadness, fatigue, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, reduced desire for sex, crying episodes, anxiety and irritability. (wikipedia)

Causes of Postpartum Syndrome

Based on Mayoclinic article about PPD, Physical changes can cause Postpartum attack in women. It says that after childbirth, a dramatic drop in hormones (estrogen and progesterone) in a mother's body may contribute to postpartum depression. They added that other hormones produced by the thyroid gland also may drop sharply — which can leave the person feeling tired, sluggish and depressed. Changes in a mother's blood volume, blood pressure, immune system and metabolism can also contribute to fatigue and mood swings.

Mayoclinic also stated the emotional factors which can cause Postpartum attack like lack of sleep that can cause trouble  handling even minor problems. It also makes a woman to be anxious about her ability to care for a newborn. She may feel less attractive or struggle with your sense of identity. She likewise may feel that she has lost control over her life, A changing lifestyle is also considered as one of the causes of postpartum syndrome, it includes demanding kids, difficulty in breast feeding and lack of financial, partner or loved-ones support.

Signs and Symptoms of Postpartum Syndrome

Postpartum syndrome symptoms is somewhat similar to Depression. A person with PPD shows signs of excessive weakness or fatigue, sleep disturbance, low libido, frequent mood changes, easily got irritated and poor appetite.

How Deal With PPD

If after giving birth and you feel those signs and symptoms and you think that you can't cope, find a professional help, talk to your doctor. You may need some counseling, medication, or both. Anti depressant medicines or counselling is given to those women who are suffering from PPD. Early detection means early cure, you should not be ashamed to tell your problems to your doctor because  this condition is almost common in woman, 1 among 10 women particularly after the first child birth are suffering from PPD. It is important that you'll be lectured the do's and don'ts after giving birth to avoid postpartum attack.

How to Avoid PPD
Parents.com enumerated these helpful tips to avoid having Postpartum Syndrome.
  • Set realistic goals, and assume a reasonable amount of responsibility -- let your family and friends help you, as much as possible, hire a someone to do your household chores while you are recovering, but if you don't have enough financial support, you can ask a family member to stay with you until you are fully recovered.
  • Break large tasks into small ones, -set priorities, and do what you can, as you can, do not try to do everything that you used to, give your self enough time to rest and recover.
  • Try to be with other people and to confide in someone - it's usually better than being alone and secretive. Talking to a friend or loved-one could greatly help for you to avoid having PPD.
  • Participate in activities that may make you feel better - attend the usual church activities, family or friend's gatherings, try to find enjoyment with the company of your family and friends.
  • Exercise regularly - take a walk outside in the morning, do some mild stretching and inhale-exhale exercise, it will surely help a lot to balance your emotions.
  • Expect your mood to improve gradually, not immediately. Remember, people rarely "snap out of" a depression. Feeling better takes time.


From those tips, I also want to add that healthy foods and enough sleep are always the best tools to keep healthy mentally and physically as well.
